City is located on the east coast between Catania and Messina. Sicels tribes were first who inhabited here for a long time. They are considered aboriginals. In the 13^th century in Taormina were built several monasteries, and this was the beginning of the revival of the city. It remained a small provincial town, and almost was not known outside of Sicily, until the 19^th century, when it was visited and praised by the great Goethe in his works; he wrote about the beauty of the local nature. From that moment began the history of Taormina as a tourist destination.
